He's even wondering aloud, maybe just to be mischievous, whether the firing officially took place at all - given that the society's board of trustees never formally approved the move. Garrett, for his part, has been telling friends that he really doesn't know why he was dismissed. Their "philosophical differences" had been clear to both of them for three or four years, and had become "irreconcilable." In their tense seven-minute final meeting, Grosvenor hadn't told Garrett, either, why he was firing him. Upstairs at that moment, in the society's "control center" conference room, Grosvenor was announcing to the senior staff that Garrett was "no longer with the magazine." When one senior editor asked if Garrett had been fired, Grosvenor told him curtly that that was none of his business. Less than 30 minutes later, Garrett was leaving the 17th Street headquarters for the last time. Grosvenor, his colleague and friend of 35 years, for a seemingly routine Monday afternoon huddle. One minute he was hustling across the National Geographic Society's executive suite to the office of the president and chairman, Gilbert M. After 10 years, it happened just like that: a snap of the fingers, and he was disappeared. Three weeks have passed since Wilbur Garrett got the news that he was no longer editor of the National Geographic magazine.
